Review 1:
A good book, and once it got back to the characters that had been discussed in book four it becomes a mash of what Martin does best, putting the people you care about into positions you wish upon no one.
Though I enjoyed Dany and Jon Snow chapters in previous books, it got to the point where I was counting pages till those chapters ended and new ones began, in part because they kept having to make deals (which is what a queen/king does) to do what they think is right.
I have only seen
a few of my most recent Game of Thrones episodes, but it appears that there are multitudes of differences between the two, so much so that I wonder how they will all tie back into the same ending. And so I will say this, if you love the show read the books... well read the Dany Chapters in the first book and then start with the second one. If you haven't watched the show because you are purest (and I am one of those people), you should watch it as they've become different beasts and yet of the same mother. I did enjoy this and believe if you like fantasy or political intrigue then you should read this book. (also if you like economics of banking)
Review 2:
Done and done. Mayhaps I initiated this reading streak too soon, what with years left before the narrative is finally finished. Ah well, it's been glorious.
Edit: I'm thinking of the whole work now and I'm reminded of a statement made by one of the characters early on. "In the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai, they say there are fields of Ghost Grass, with stalks as pale as milk that glow in the night, murders all other grass. The Dothraki believe that one day, it'll cover everything, and that's the way the world will end." That encapsulates so much of the story. The enduring force of the world itself, as aligned neither with or against the most cunning plans of humankind.
