It was unnecessary. Her heart had slowed to match the impossibly slow beat of his. She brushed the snow from his face and began a minute examination of his wounds. His body was crisscrossed in scars—nearly as bad as her own, should she allow anyone to see her as she was. His skin was ice-cold. Every Carpathian learned from childhood how to control the temperature in their bodies, yet he was freezing.Little sister! Raja’s whine ended in a growl of warning. From the old and fresh scars on his ankles and wrists, she could tell he had been chained, the links coated with vampire blood, burning into his flesh each time he moved. Out of all the books in the Carpathian series that I have read so far, this one resonates with me the most.
Two broken people who each fought on their own to survive, rebuild and overcome. So when they finally meet each other, they can support each other and continue to heal; there is no clinging or complete dependency, they each uplift each other. I like that.
Secondly, despite all the torture that Razvan underwent, he manages to exude calm, and inner peace. Over the centuries, he has come to the realization of 2 major points:1) you cannot control the thoughts and actions of others, so why get angry, despair or get guilt over the actions of others and 2) why care what others think, only the opinion of those who TRULY know you matter.
In this point of my life, I really needed to hear/read these words and read Razvan's mantra. Through his story (fictional though it is) it gives me hope, courage and resilience. I love this story- 'Dark Slayer'. I will buy a copy to re-read it often.
