James Beattie was an 18th century Scottish scholar and writer. Beattie was a professor of moral philosophy. His best known work The Minstrel can be found in this collection. The Grave is Robert Blair's main work. It consists of 767 lines of blank verse with a religious theme. The third poet in this collection is William Falconer. Falconer was a sailor, which inspired his most famous poem, The Shipwreck. Falconer was serving on the frigate Aurora when it was lost at sea rounding the Cape of Good Hope.
